We started early voting last week, so I went to courthouse today, since Monday is my day off and Tuesday is not. I voted against the marriage amendment, of course. It will probably pass, but at least I put my opinion on the ballot. Most of these state amendments and laws saying that marriage will be defined as being between a man and woman are going to pass. We'll eventually have to have a decision by the US Supreme Court stating that they are discriminatory and unconstitutional. It will happen. It'll just take a while.

I don't see why people don't realize immediately that these laws are discriminatory. Not discrimination because of sexual orientation, which is still legal in many places, but discrimination based on sex, which is not legal anywhere in the country. If I'm a man and I want to marry a woman, it's okay. If I'm a woman and I want to marry a woman, it's illegal. That is discriminatory toward me because I'm a woman. Simple, right? Why don't people see that?

I also voted against extending the term limits law in my state. It's weird. It's like they put a term limit on the term limit law, so that we have to vote to extend the law or term limits will go away. I'm glad that was on the ballot, because I want the law to go away. Term limits encourage voters to be lazy. If you want someone out of office, get out and vote that person out of office. Or run yourself.

I don't even like term limits for the presidency. If we hadn't started having term limits for the presidency after FDR, we'd still have Clinton as president, which would be an improvement, particularly when you think about the gradual erosion of our civil rights perpetrated by the current administration.

In other news, the TWoP forums are still up and down, but mostly down. That's okay. I know the administrators will get them up and running again soon. They run a good website.

Well, by expressing my opinion, I just mean I voted. So I can only really have a for or against opinion.

Is Austria a democracy, or a republic, or what? I just assume that most countries in western Europe vote the same way we do. Please pardon my ignorance. :)

Republic. Actually federal republic, but the official title is just "republic". Lookie: http://www.wordiq.com/definition/Austria

But anyway. We have a chancellor. That's who's seen as in charge.

You know what's funny? Austria is... small.. small.. tiny.. small. But we're in a similar situation. Our current chancellor was NOT elected in 1999 (his party came in third!) but nevertheless is in office. And he was sort-of re-elected last year. People are dumb.

So the conservatives are in power, we had cuts in social security etc, and they've put their people in strategic places everywhere, establishing a power structure. Does that sound familiar to you?
