My sister got her staples out last week, and she's doing pretty well. She went in on Tuesday and got the port of the chemo put in--that was pretty painful for her, and it's freaking me out a little. Having things surgically implanted under your skin--*shudder* Even those birth control things freak me out.

She goes to see the chemo doctor on Monday. I'm not sure when she'll start with the chemo. I guess we'll find out next week.

She told me something yesterday that happened when she was being wheeled out of surgery. She was just coming out of the anesthesia, and, you know, the hearing is the first thing to come back. She overheard her orderlies having a conversation as they went up in the elevator. One of them mentioned that he hadn't heard of my sister's surgeon before. The other orderly said, "Oh yeah, he's the one who takes the cases nobody else wants." My sister mentioned this to the anesthesiologist later, and recommended that they caution their employees about what they say around seemingly unconscious patients.

When she went back to have the port put in, she got a visit from a hospital administrator who told her that they had had quite a few meetings about this issue after she mentioned it.

That was pretty upsetting. Val said she just took it to mean that her surgeon is very good. He has specialties in ObGyn, oncology, and surgery. I think it's unusual to have three specialty areas, so he is very good.

As for me, I haven't had any testing done yet. I've talked to my doctor about it, and I've decided to wait until I get some supplemental insurance especially for cancer, and also until I can sign up for long-term disability insurance at work (which will be in September, I think). Once that's all in order, I'll probably have the blood test and the ultrasound (my doctor said that would be covered by insurance) and possibly the genetic test--it's called a BRCA, and it tells you if you have a genetic predisposition to have ovarian cancer and breast cancer, and, I'm pretty sure, pancreatic cancer.

So anyway, that's what's going on with that whole thing.
