From Theatre by Robert Cohen. It's sitting next to my computer waiting patiently for me to recover from my obsession with fanfic and regain my ability to read an actual book.
It's really weird that this is the sentence. I watched Jesus Christ, Superstar today for the first time in about twenty-five years (I had forgotten how much I like the music--I may buy the soundtrack again, on cd this time instead of vinyl), and I was thinking about Jesus's role as a scapegoat and the similarities between Jesus and various figures in other mythologies. And now, six hours later, I do this meme. Seriously weird, huh?
Some kind of synchronicity going on here, I guess.

Date: 2006-01-22 09:27 pm (UTC)If you know the music, you know the story, since it's really an opera and the music is the story. It focuses on the conflict between Jesus's roles as a political revolutionary (what Judas wanted from him) and as the ultimate scapegoat (what Jesus expected for himself).
I had forgotten that the movie opened with the cast driving into the desert (it was filmed in Israel) on a bus, getting out, and then putting on their costumes and makeup. Pretty cool idea.
The original cast recording has better voices (except for Judas and Mary Magdalene, who are played by the same people).
Definitely worth watching.

Date: 2006-01-22 10:02 pm (UTC)Something else interesting that I would never have picked up on when I saw it in the theater (I was about thirteen)--there is a very slashy vibe between Jesus and Judas. When Judas berates Jesus for allowing Mary to wash his feet, he acts like a jealous lover--you don't get that just from the music. Also, after Jesus has been taken prisoner and Judas is expressing his regret for the betrayal, he reprises Mary Magdalene's song, "I Don't Know How to Love Him." I don't remember that from the original album, but maybe it was in there. It was incredibly slashy.
Also, the Herod scene was like something out of a gay bar in the seventies. Very entertaining. *g*
The guy who played Pilate was brilliant. Just wonderful.
