This is my fourth or fifth try to post my first entry. I hope I get it right this time. I'm not sure if I have anything really interesting to say. I'm here at LJ because I've become obsessed with SV fanfic over the past few months and I keep getting linked here from the fanfic sites. I decided to get my own LJ so I can comment on other people's journals non-anonymously. Or as non-anonymously as anyone ever gets on the web, I suppose.

That's fan fiction for the TV series Smallville. I've just recently found out about the whole idea of fan fiction because of that show. Thanks for noticing me, by the way!

Okay. So what is fan fiction?

I did a search for people in Arkansas and found you that way. I'm over in Conway. I don't know how much we have in common, but it would be nice to chat with people from the home state!

People who are fans of a particular TV show or movie will often write original fiction featuring the characters from that show or movie. They do it, I believe, out of love for the show or the characters. Sometimes they do it out of frustration with the direction the show is taking and a desire to have different outcomes for the characters.

I wound up at LJ by way of a website called Television Without Pity, where they have recaps of various TV shows and forum discussions about the shows. In some the Smallville recaps, the recapper referred to a particular scene as "the scene that launched a thousand fanfics." I didn't know what he was talking about until I went to the Smallville fanfic recommendations forum and started following the links. I read the fanfic, enjoyed it, and started looking for more about the authors so I could tell them I enjoyed their stories; that's how I arrived at LJ.

How did you wind up here? I've been reading a little in your journal, but I haven't gone back very far. Feel free to email me. My address is on my info page.

Born and raised in Arkansas. Did my undergrad at UCA, then my husband and I moved to Lafayette, IN to do our graduate work at Purdue University. We stayed there for four years to work and when the opportunity to come back came up, I was on it. I wanted to go home. He's still in IN, until at least one of us has a full time position. My department is in the process of hiring the permanent position right now and its driving my crazy.

The fanfic stuff sounds kind of cool. I'm not into writing, but the idea is neat. The idea of it never would have occured to me.
