It's frustrating to watch the controversy over same sex marriage in the news. It seems to me that it's an idea whose time has come, and I don't understand why so many people are so resistant to the idea. I'm proud of Multnomah County, Oregon, which, according to Planet Out news, is the only county in the United States where same-sex couples can legally marry right now. Planet Out writes that the county commissioners decided Monday to ignore the opinion of the state attorney general, who declared the practice illegal.

Do these people who are resisting the idea not see the flow of history?

New ideas in our nation usually begin on the coasts and move toward the middle. It's the same with this one, with marriages and civil unions in California, Washington, Oregon, New York, Vermont, Massachusetts--along both coasts. It *will* happen! It's inevitable. Why don't they see it?

I concur, but unfortunately most people fear change and very few people get their news from the source. They get it after it has been mutated. For instance, several years ago when there was a Gay Pride march somewhere, the national news coverage was fairly tame-people carrying banners and interviews with a few normal gay couples. Later that evening I tuned to CBN (Christian Broadcast Network, I watch it occaisonally to see what propaganda they are preaching) and their coverage featured some bondage freaks romping, alone, in a park somewhere around the march. The visual gives a completely different meaning. Most people are stupid, too, which is why stupid people shouldn't be allowed to breed. ;)

stupid people--absolutely!

This cracked me up because I've said pretty much the same thing so many times.

I suppose it is fear. I have trouble understanding the emotions of people who are prejudiced against gays (or prejudiced against anyone, really). I know it's called homophobia, but it seems more like hatred than fear.

There has been a whole thread of homophobia going on in the Conway newspaper. They recently ran an article on a couple who live in Conway. The crazy fundamentalists were outraged and keep writing letters to the editor. Appearantly, all the queers are living a dangerous and God hating lifestyle and will all eternally perish in the fires of hell. Personally? I don't believe in hell or that "God" gets that involved. I like the "do unto others as you would have done to you" bit. That seems to be sage and sensible advice.
