I'm having surgery on Monday, so wish me luck!
My sister died of ovarian cancer a few years ago, so my mom, my niece and I got tested for the BRCA gene that makes you more likely to have breast and ovarian cancer, and we all have it. I decided to have a hysterectomy/oophorectomy to avoid the ovarian cancer, and that will also make me less likely to have breast cancer.
This has been a weird year so far.

Date: 2011-06-25 03:00 am (UTC)One of my good friends (and a coworker) is also positive for one of the BRCA genes. She's currently pregnant, but as soon as she's able, she will also have the hyst/ooph surgery. Further down the road, she plans on also having a bilat. mastectomy. It's such a personal decision for someone to have to make. I'm glad you're on top of all this and being pro-active about taking care of yourself.
Wishing you all the best for a speedy post-op recovery! I had the TAH/BSO a few years ago and the recovery time wasn't nearly as bad as I had thought. Hugs to you!

Date: 2011-06-25 03:12 am (UTC)A bilateral mastectomy is down the road for me as well, but my surgeon said that having this surgery now will make me less likely to get breast cancer, so I can wait a bit on that.
I'll post after the surgery to let people know how it went. *hugs*
